Pirates in Pink Beach 5K is October 13

Aug 27, 2019Government, Local, Member News

“It started as a general conversation about how the city could support breast cancer awareness month,” says Treasure Island Police Officer Lauren Styles. “We thought a 5K run in October would be a good way to involve our Police and Recreation Departments, and involve the community, too.”

In short order, a partnership was forged with the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for the inaugural Pirates in Pink Beach 5K, scheduled to step off at 8 a.m. on Sunday, October 13, beginning and ending at Treasure Island Gulf Front Park, 10400 Gulf Blvd., on Treasure Island.

Officer Styles says organizers hope to raise between $5,000 and $10,000 to support the mission to prevent, detect, and treat breast cancer, and provide help and hope to those facing the disease.

The community is already responding. A host of local businesses are donating items to put into runners’ “swag bags.” Publix on Treasure Island is donating water and fruit to be handed out to runners along the beach side race route. Ricky T’s Bar & Grille is hosting the after party, with complimentary champagne and bloody marys for race participants.

To support the run, the American Cancer Society will host two themed costume contests, one for Best Bra, and one for Best Pirate Gear. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, part of the after party.

“It’s going to be a lot of work, and a lot of fun,” assures Officer Styles. “To extend the festivities, we’re holding race check-in on Saturday, October 12, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Treasure Bay Golf & Tennis at 10315 Paradise Blvd. Early registrants can pick up their t-shirts and swag bags there.”

Race day will be a flurry of activity, with police and recreation staff setting up tents and tables, defining the race route, and placing the water stations along the route.

Registration fee is $35 through October 12. On-site registration is $45. Register to run or donate to the inaugural Pirates in Pink Beach 5K at runsignup.com/piratesinpink5k .
