20180525 Islettes donation

Toni Hawkins, (center) The Islettes President, said that the goal of the Islettes has always been to come together socially and purposefully, adding, “As we grow who knows what we can accomplish?”

The Treasure Islettes, the thriving women’s club of Treasure Island, have supported their community and other organizations since their inception in 1955. This year, the Islettes donated $32,300 for academic scholarships, the Treasure Island City Recreation summer camp, the Police Department, the Treasure Island Public works as well as to the Honor Flight.

Four recipients who will each receive a $4,000 scholarship for the  2018-2019 school year are Taylor Anthony, attending University of South Florida; Jennifer Dawson, attending Louisiana State University; Katherine Gomez, attending University of Central Florida; and Alex Tallman, attending St. Petersburg College.

The Treasure Island City Recreation Summer camp will receive $1,000.

The Islettes began the scholarship program more than 47 years ago and have helped countless local students obtain undergraduate and graduate degrees and many of these students have gone on to succeed in fields such as law, education, ecology, environmental science, business management, athletic training and law enforcement. Funding for the scholarship program comes through weekly Thursday night bingo games.

Other donations included $9,500 to the Treasure Island Police Department for much needed improved bullet proof vests, $5,000 for flowers to the Treasure Island Public Works Department for the beautification of the public areas in Treasure Island, and $800 to the Honor Flight.
